Let's talk about J. Roddy and The Hold Steady at the Recher in Towson, MD the other night...
I love corporate sponsorship. Free hats, free shirts, fee belt buckles, free itunes songs (shit - forgot I had that and just bought one!), free harmonica, free belt buckle, enough free guitar picks to last me the rest of the year, free raffle for a free guitar and free (very decent) food buffet ... oh yeah, and it was a free show. THANK YOU, JACK DANIELS! (When I first approached the bar and someone told me there was a set menu of Jack drinks, I thought he meant that the DRINKS were free too, and I almost #3'd in my pants... but alas, that was the one thing we had to pay for - oh well, still a jackpot.)
Got there just in time for J. Roddy & the Biz and They. Killed. It. Wish the set was longer, but the energy was fuckin retarded ... I mean that in a good way. I have some vid, but unfortunately the sound didn't come out so great this time either b/c of the sound guy or b/c of my proximity to a certain speaker -- the mix/levels was off (too much on the piano and one of the kit mics). I will post that shit later on as an update to this post anyway.
Now on to The Hold Steady... more like the Hold My Balls. My mama said "if you ain't got nuthin nice to say, then don't say nuthin a t'all" but fuck that. (Actually don't think it was my mama that said it anyway, but someone's did.)
The Hold Steady is apparently from MN or something, but they play out of BK. They look pretty Brooklyn actually... especially the Ron Jeremy-mustached keyboardist. He actually looked excellent. Kind of like Wario from the Mario Bros. games. And I must say the BAND was excellent. Fantastic musicianship, fantastic arrangements, the keys were tasteful and very good and the ax man doth shreddeth. Here lies the problem: I couldn't watch the band after a few songs and hear anything except a voice in my head demanding that I smash the singer's face in. That is a reaction - maybe sans the schizo voice - that many people will have upon seeing this band.
Basically my review is A+ for the band and F- for the douche with the mic, but oddly enough, the band obviously falates the singer and seemingly looks at him as their key to success. I will admit that he gives an interesting style ... the kind of 'more talking than singing' style that allows for good storytelling in a song. It's a tool used by many of the greats on a few songs here and there. The Hold Steady does it every goddamn song. When I first listened to the band, I instantly thought "these guys rock" ... 3 or 4 more songs in I was sick of the schtick and could take no more. I still had high hopes in seeing them live.
This band has a following. The audience knew words. They sang along at key parts and there were certain parts of songs that the audience shouting out the line or a chant made the song. It was beautiful -- always a lovely thing to see at a show. But it didn't make up for the fact that the singer of this band ruins the whole experience. In addition to bringing nothing more in the live show than he did on audio, he spazzes out and talks/sings/giggles off mic, in between actual lines. I don't care that he is kind of preppy or nerdy with coke-bottle glasses -- that's not the turn-off. It's the vocal style and phrasing which get obnoxious fast and his damn demeanor -- picture Pee Wee Herman, but instead of the adorable, red bow tie-clad hero of my youth (and adulthood), it's an unfunny, uncharismatic dork.
We saw the show for free, and I would have paid money anyway to see the opening act, but if these guys come around, do yourself a favor and don't bother. Or look 'em up and listen for yourself. Maybe our tastes differ.
Hugs and assgrabs.

A little more listening pleasure
I love cover songs. I love them even more when they are covering genres that have little to no similarity to the original song. The Arctic Monkeys cover of "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" is a great cover of a great song, originally done by Baby Charles. Both versions are so good, I can hardly decide which one I like more.

For a Little Listening Pleasure
As I had promised from the very beginning of this blog, I was gonna post some MP3s for a little listening pleasure. I know i have slacked off from the very beginning, but I'm here to try and right the train. So as to keep the four loyal readers of this blog satisfied, here is my next contribution.
"Sugarman" by Sixto Diaz Rodriguez (more commonly known as simply Rodriguez) is a deliciously eerie song that does well for both it's simplicity as well as it's political statements. Rodriguez is known for singing about the troubles of inner city life, himself a product of such upbringing. This song is a statement about the false friend that drugs can become to a person, offering a temporary answer to life's problems.
Rodriguez himself has a pretty interesting story. Growing up in inner city Detroit, he tried to emerge in the music world in the late 60's, early 70's to little critical success. After fading away by the mid-70's, his music somehow caught on in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Unbeknownst to him, he had become somewhat of a cult icon in those countries, even achieving platinum status for one of his re-released albums. It wasn't until the late 90's that he accidentally discovered (by way of his daughter's discovery of a fan site on the Internet) that he had a following in these countries and began touring again.

Eli Paperboy Reed at Rock and Roll Hotel
First - that Joaquin stunt in Miami has been all over the various twitterscapes and interblogz and it seems that it wasn't even a good act... like people there said he used the crowd to hide the fact that he really wasn't doing anything (just kind of trying to make it look like something was going on)... and on top of that, the person he was supposedly going after was a girl - which unless it was some sick homage to Chris Brown means that the dude might actually be psycho, except I forgot, he's full of shit and it's all a lame act anyway. The schtick is already old. Do. Not. Want. Unfunny. Now. It might have actually been a hilarious spoof documentary that Casey AFLAC is filming, but this whole idea to make it this public ongoing spectacle ruined it. Ruiners.
So back to the point of the post:
Eli Paperboy Reed and the True Loves ROCKED it hard last night. I am gonna see these guys every time they [bling bling] come around my city. Holy shit. Who would have thought the white(st) side of Boston, MA would have been the breeding ground for the next dope REAL R&B singer. Boy got pipes. And the band is the truth too.
Look him up on the myspace or the seeqpod or buy buy buy - BULL MARKET!!! - via your itunes or whatever.
I forgot my handy dandy flip cam, which is really your loss, because the video would have been luscious and plump. So I took a couple o' pics. Wack substitute but meh. Look how they all blur together....trippy, dude.

Joaquin Phoenix REALLY flips his shit!
Really?!?!? Come on buddy, it's time to lose the act and get back to something you're good at, kinda.
Anyway, turns out Joaquin Phoenix went postal on some heckling guy at a performance in Miami early this morning.
Still waiting on the mixtape. And for some talent to surface.

Paul's Boutique Turned 20 Yesterday
Thanks, Fat Laced. -- http://fatlacemagazine.uproxx.com/?p=4110
Paul's Boutique is the holy grail... well, maybe not right analogy, but it's the true originating point for sampling in modern music. Therefore, like you can say that early Metallica really is the foundation for entire genre of "speed metal," you can say Paul's Boutique is the foundation - in a big way - of the entire hip hop genre, and actually other DJ-based genres too in the more 'electronic' realm (at least break beat, trip hop and definitely a lot of house).
Aside from the historical significance of the sampling breakthrough, Paul's Boutique is just a sick, SICK album. Thanks, Beasties. I tip my dust blunt to ya.

Hi-Caliber
I am SORRY to interject any kind of politics into this music blog, but this IS music. RAW, ILL, DOPE... Republican... Hip Hop fo' dat azz.
Mostly I had to post this too b/c the first comment on this Daily Beast Article made me pee myself a little... not enough that I had to change my clothes or leave work or anything, just a little ... I swear. This isn't *that* political anyway...

"Now if we can just get the 13 year old conservative (Robin, boy wonder) Joe the Plumber (Martian Manhunter) and of course Sarah Palin (Wonder Woman) together we'll have sort of a retarded Justice League."HAHAHAHHA. That is hilarious. 13 year old refers to some kid from CPAC... you don't care, but it's funny. I just peed myself again I think. SHIT!

Saint's Fans are CRAY-ZEE!!!
By Saints, I'm not talking about the amazing Aussie punk band from the 70's, I'm talking about New Orleans Saints. This video virtually speaks for itself. All I can add to it is WOW, that must have cost a bit of coin to put it together. The choreography, barn dancing, the Firebird, cameo by Steve Gleason, the Tarzan move, it's all pretty amazing! Only a Kevin Bacon cameo would have iced the sweet cake of 80's dance greatness that is this masterpiece.
World Premiere: The New SupaSaint Video - Supaloose from Steve Wolfram on Vimeo.
I know this isn't strictly speaking, a music related item. I just loved it so much, I felt I had to share. Next off topic blog post will likely be about Top Chef (spoiler-I don't fucking care who won).

Bad news, Betz
Seems your "imp" may not stay in the game much longer. According to what she told MTV, she isn't sure her future plans will include continuing to make music. Doubtful, though. Someone will make it worth her while.
I gotta agree with you - although she is quite poppy, I <3 her attitude.

The Hot Hess Mess - Weekend Update
For the love of beds and downtime, I was really hoping that I would get a break from all the insanity that is going on this weekend and next week too. Just ONE day/night off, is that too much to ask Music Gods?
But alas, NO!!
When I was at DC9 last night to catch Earthless and Witch, the esteemed neighborhood bartender, Boo, famous for his stints at Asylum and Rock and Roll Hotel, was working the upstairs bar. We started talking and he mentioned that he has a new music project called Domino Team. It features himself, one of the most rocking-est guitarists/screamers around. It also features Andrew Black (of The Explosion and Georgie James) on drums.
Anyway, show is at Asylum, this Sunday, March 1. Not sure of doors time or cover charge, but for me, it's an easy 2 minute walk, so I feel a bit obliged to support our local musicians. Holla!!!

Lily Allen is pretty cool
Maybe I read too much of With Leather or whichever blog that is where the guy talks about how much he loves Lily Allen all the time, but I must say, she really is quite the adorable little imp. I don't know if she writes her own songs and I would assume she does not because that's pretty much standard for that kind of pop music, but a bunch of them are great. And her videos are funny too. I just watched some new video of hers that was promo'd on the AIM homepage or something and she looked really cute in it. But then I linked over the the Smile video. I've always liked the song (even though I guess I first got into it b/c of the Wale sample/remix -- it always comes back to Wale with me... I guess I'm one-dimensional), but the video is pretty funny! Gives her boyfriend/ex/whatever laxatives and they hit him at home after her friends have ransacked his place and stuffed his shitter with his clothes -- GOLD!
Here are both vids:

Rick Rubin remembers his roots
I just got word through Pitchfork that Rick Rubin will be working with Clipse on their new album. While I am eagerly waiting for their newest album, Till the Casket Drops, this is even bigger news. Rick Rubin is a hell of a producer and lending his hand at knob twiddling only means that Clipse, a great group in their own right, are only gonna sound MORE righteous.
J Roddy = SCIENCE
![]() |
| From random |
If my esteemed collegue has not convinced you, let the boys speak for themselves. Or again.
J Roddy Walston is science
I've been testing my hypothesis that a variation of Boltzmann's Fourth Law of Thermodynamics (which states that you can't really "be down" with D.C. unless you are down with the hip hop artist Wale) can be applied to Baltimore Rock and Roll and I've found that it actually can apply to Rock and Roll across the board. My tentative conclusion thus far is that if one sincerely likes the Rock and/or the Roll at all, that person MUST also appreciate J. Roddy Walston and the Business. Therefore, particles attracted to this musical genre should be compelled to migrate toward DC9 by the intersection of U & 9th Streets in Washington, DC this Saturday night.

May = METAL!!!!!

HOLY F---IN CRAP!!!!! My birthday month just got so much sweeter with this announcement:
May Merriweather Metal
Now’s the time to break out the tattered skin-tight black jeans and those dusty white high tops with the huge tongues hangin’ out, because M3 Rock Festival is here! Not only does this mammoth metal fest feature 16 bands on 2 stages playing over 10 hours of music, but there’s also all sorts of bitchin’ booths and attractions and enough hairspray to destroy 5 ozone layers. That’s a whole lotta hair! Pile your posse in the DeLorean and head to the Party Pavilion!
M3 Rock Festival Presented by 98 Rock featuring
TWISTED SISTER • RATT • EXTREME
Kix • Dokken • Slaughter • Y&T • Gilby Clarke • Keel • Jetboy • L.A. Guns • Jani Lane of Warrant • XYZ • BulletBoys • Slamm and more!@ Merriweather Post Pavilion • Columbia, MD
Saturday, May 30
11am Gates
I just wonder how they decide who goes on the main stage, and who gets relegated to the second stage. "No dude, YOU GUYS totally fizzled out long before we did. The kids still remember US!" The only thing I am not looking forward to about this show is there will be alot of 40-50 year old has-been rock stars on stage. But, upside is it'll be like being in grade school again. Iron Maiden was awesome at Merriweather, I am sure this show will be fun too.
The Hot Hess Mess - Extended Edition
Even MORE goings on are going on the week after the weekend of insanity!!!!
Monday
Black Cat is hosting Blitzen Trapper. I like these guys alot, not least of which because they are always reinventing their sound, keeping their fans on their toes. Unfortunately, this show is sold out, but look on Craigslist for options.
Tuesday
Lucinda Williams is playing at 9:30 Club. I saw her last year at Rams Head and she does a good show. Worth seeing if you got $50 to spare. She has added a second show the following night, but that means you would miss out on...
Wednesday
The Whigs will be at the Black Cat this night. They are a pretty good trio that recently toured with Kings of Leon and We Are Scientists. To tour with that type of company only speaks volumes about how good these guys are. I have never seen them live, but their albums exude a powerful sound that would give me hopes of a great show from these guys.
Also, if you are in Virginia, be sure to head over to the Birchmere to check out Justin Townes Earle. An amazing songwriter and musician. He will be travelling down here just one day after his new album, Midnight at the Movies hits the streets.
Thursday
The Black Cat will be taken over by crazy swaying kids to behold the awesome live hijinks of The Black Lips. I've seen these guys twice last year, once at the Cat and once as an opening act for The Raconteurs. The show at the Cat was awesome, lots of energy, crazy fans and the like. When they opened for the Raconteurs, a certain element of their music didn't translate well to the bigger venue, so alot of their raw rock and roll power was lost. But at the Cat? Heck yeah, I'd see them!!!
Seriously, I wish I got paid to find kick ass shows and tell the world about them.

The Hot Hess Mess - Weekend Shenanigans
Looks like it's gonna be an exciting, jam-packed weekend full of all sorts of musical goings on. My interests will bring me to these shows:
Thursday
DC9 is hosting a trio of great bands, not the least of which is Witch, the new project featuring Dinosaur Jr. guru J. Mascis. But instead of playing guitar and singing half mumbled lyrics, he has actually taken up his first, as in main, instrument, drums for this project. Altpress.com had some kind words about the stoner rock foursome: "On Paralyzed, Witch combine the occasional pass at Pentagram's classic reverb ring with massive doses of bleary stoned-drone, moaning a few half-hearted shout-outs to a handful of vintage rock obscurities along the way."
The band I am most stoked to see is Earthless, an instrumental psych-rock trio from San Diego that features drummer Mario Rubalcaba of Rocket From The Crypt & Hot Snakes fame. I am a huge RFTC and Hot Snakes fan, in addition to all the side projects and off shoots that those bands have created over the years.
Also, Black Plastic Bag did a Q&A session with these guys. Wish I could have been there for it.
Finally, opening the entire set is Ostinato, a band I know absolutely nothing about.
Friday
Heading over to the Rock and Roll Hotel to check out Tapes n' Tapes. I have two extra tix for this show too.
Saturday
Back to DC9 for their 5th Anniversary Party!!! Not only am I a sucker for venue's anniversary parties (remember getting awesome with Rattler and Ced Hughes?) But the line up for DC9's anniversary party looks amazing:
Jukebox the Ghost (I saw these guys at Ft. Reno summer of 2008; they have catchy music and put on a really good show)
J-Roddy Walston and The Business (this is an AMAZING band from B-more, they are insanely fun, and their music is really good, you are GUARANTEED to be a fan after you hear them)
With special guests: DJ Marc-Alan Gray, Liberation Dance Party DJs
Doors @ 9:00pm
And even more goodness happens later in the evening:
Cover $5 after midnight
HAPPY HOUR
Midnight - 3:00am
So if you can make it out to any of these, I'd HIGHLY suggest it. It's gonna be one hell of a weekend. Luckily, I have no responsibilities after 7pm Thursday, so I'll be taking ALL of it in.

Held this year from June 11-14, the lineup is already promising to be an event of epic proportions.
